I'm not sure if video conferencing works in MyPal, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Unfortunately, most major video conferencing applications do not support Windows XP. Video conferencing - With the COVID-19 pandemic still going on, video conferencing is very important if you're working from home.Using an older version, such as Office 2003 or LibreOffice 5.4 is recommended. Office work - Modern versions of LibreOffice and Microsoft Office do not support Windows XP.Media playback - VLC still currently supports Windows XP for playing modern audio and video formats.Text Editing - Notepad++ still works on XP without problems.I haven't tested it out for myself, however. Steam - Steam has dropped support for XP, but I've heard rumors it's still possible to use it, or at least an older version.Lots of great games released in that time, so perhaps consider sticking to those. Actually, I'd consider XP's best modern use to be for 2000's era gaming, however. Gaming - Good luck getting modern games to run on XP.Email - You're best off using a web based email client. The only way to run Discord is the web browser version in MyPal, which works fine. Discord - unfortunately, the Discord desktop app is not compatible with Windows XP.Although I haven't tested them, I'd assume Netflix and Twitch run fine as well. YouTube - works completely fine on MyPal, assuming your PC is powerful enough to handle it. Also, note that the only web browser extensions you may use are Pale Moon extensions, meaning you may need to find alternatives to extensions you are currently using. I'd recommend you use 2GB of RAM or more if you plan on using the web much. This is especially relevant if you plan to run XP on a low power machine. It takes a bit of configuration to make MyPal look less like Internet Explorer 8 and more like Firefox, but once you have set it up, it's alright looking UI wise, However, speed could be a major issue for some people. First of all, it's based on the less popular Pale Moon browser, which has an outdated UI and is considered slower than most other browsers. While it's great that MyPal exists, it has a few problems. MyPal is a web browser which works on the modern web that runs on Windows XP. Thankfully, we have MyPal, a fork of Pale Moon, which is a fork of Firefox. All major web browsers (Firefox, Chromium, etc.) have long since dropped support for Windows XP. Web Browsing - obviously the most important use of a computer today. In this section, I'll go over some of them and comment on how usable they are. What can be doneÄespite its age, there are still a lot of modern computing things which are possible on XP. And finally, part of XP's source code leaked, which gave us some interesting things such as a way to sign Windows XP themes, allowing them to be used without uxtheme.dll being patched. Another much smaller event was the shutdown of XP's internet games. The biggest event was the shutdown of Microsoft's update servers for legacy Windows versions, although there are apparently guides on how to still receive updates. Recent EventsĪ lot has happened in the past year, most of which has not been kind to XP. I'm writing this guide in order to help spread information about what you can do in XP today, what's changed in the past year, and what problems you will face. Many of us have still tried to stay on XP despite its age, however as the years go on Windows XP becomes harder and harder to use, as more and more things happen which complicate XP's usage. On October 25th, 2021, Windows XP's 20th anniversary will be upon us.
